‘Night of the Ammonites’, © Ray Troll, 2000

High in the Rockies above Denver, giant ammonite fossils cover a field near the town of Kremmling. These coiled shells are startling evidence that a sea covered Colorado before the rise of the Rocky Mountains. The mud that accumulated on the bottom of the seas buried the ammonites and the subsequent uplift of the mountains carried the ancient seafloor high up into the mountains. — Kirk Johnson
