Trilobites are the poster children of extinction. They lived in the waters of our planet from the Cambrian (half a billion years ago) to the end of the Permian—more than 250 million years—and evolved into an estimated 20,000 some species. They grew less common toward the end of the Paleozoic and finally succumbed to extinction at the end of the Permian (250,000 years ago). Some of the best-known species come from the blazing-hot deserts in Utah where Ray had one of his first opportunities to excavate a complete Modocia trilobite. This is the image that was inspired by that life-altering experience. Ray’s also got a flaming trilobite tattooed on his right arm. — Kirk Johnson, RT
