The K-T boundary asteroid impact was a catastrophic worldwide event that caused the extinction of the dinosaurs 65.5 million years ago. It also wiped out vast numbers of plants and insect life. In North America, more than 50% of plant species became extinct. Any extinction is also an opportunity and the ten million years that followed the K-T boundary saw the rapid evolution of mammals and the first appearance of tropical rain forests. — Kirk Johnson
