‘Lunchtime in the Morrsion Formation’, © Ray Troll

The Morrison Formation was deposited more than 140 million years ago in what is now the Rocky Mountain region. This formation contains fossils of many kinds of long-necked dinosaurs and a bunch of true carnivores. The Cleveland-Lloyd quarry in central Utah preserves skeletons of more than fifty of these meat eaters. Ray has pictured three of the biggest predators gathered around a Diplodocus carcass in a field of ferns and cycads. — Kirk Johnson, RT
