So what’s so cool about these deep-sea freakazoid fishes? Well for one thing the females dwarf the tiny little males, in many species they can be 60 times larger than the boys. Ouch. The females do all the hard work in this relationship. They produce their very own light source on the ends of movable “fishing rods” (called the esca) that grow out of the middle of their heads.
