Five Eyes and a Mouth
on the End of a Stalk!
One of my personal favorites from Burgess Shale is the bizarre beast called Opabinia. This Cambrian clown of an animal sported a segmented trunk, five eyes on stalks on a distinct head, gills on its body and a mouth on the end of a nozzle. Who knows what we would look like if that ancient Burgess reef were still here today??
