Blue Babe is a beautifully preserved 50,000 year old steppe bison (Bison priscus) mummy that was found near Fairbanks in 1979. It was donated to the University of Alaska Museum of the North where Dr. Dale Guthrie determined that lions had killed Blue Babe. The mineral vivianite found in its skin turned the carcass blue, hence the nickname. The animal was so well preserved that Dale and friends later cooked some of the meat up in a stew. Asked about the flavor Dale said it “tasted like mud.”
