Megalodon was a gigantic shark that ruled the prehistoric seas from 23 to 2.6 million years ago in the Miocene and Pliocene epochs. Scientists differ on whether it more closely resembled a stockier version of today‚Äôs day Great White shark, Mako shark or the Sand Tiger shark. Estimates of megalodon’s size are extrapolated from the size of their teeth with conservative estimates of 60 feet in length. They snacked on whales and other large marine mammals of their time.

These teeth were found by scuba divers searching through the muddy depths of rivers in North and South Carolina.
