TIDE POOL TO THE STARS
Early in 1940 author John Steinbeck and his marine biologist friend Ed Ricketts chartered the Western Flyer, a Monterey based sardine seiner, to take them on a six week long expedition to Mexico’s Sea of Cortez. Steinbeck eventually published ‘The Log from the Sea of Cortez’ in 1951 widely considered to be one of his best works. In it he wrote “it is advisable to look from the tide pool to the stars and then back to the tide pool again”, referring to the unity of all life.
