Steelhead, also called metalhead, are one of the most highly sought after sportfish because they can be so darned elusive and always put up a tenacious fight when hooked. They’re a true challenge for even the most avid fisher, who must brave cold water, wind and rain in rugged country. It takes a lot of skill, commitment and determination to catch one of these extraordinary fish. Technically they are a pacific salmon ( Oncorhynchus mykiss) and grow to 45 inches long and weigh 50 pounds. The name “steelhead” comes from the blue-gun-metal color of their heads and backs. They really are a beautiful fish to behold.
