Fish Quiz

Think you know your north pacific fishes? Take the test!

I spent most of 2010 painting this 7 by 15 ft. acrylic on canvas mural for the University of Washington’s School of Aquatic and Fishery Sciences. In 2017 I was lucky enough to meet programming genius Tom Grauman in Friday Harbor, Washington.

One thing led to another and we soon came up with the idea to have Tom create an app to explore the mural at high resolution, which led to the idea of having the infamous Dr. Milton Love write some witty text about each of the fishes. That soon spawned the idea of designing a test where the participants can challenge their fish knowledge at different levels of difficulty. An informal demo at Friday Harbor Labs led to the introduction by “Fish Guy” Dr. Adam Summers.

You can dial in how tough a test you want to take, from beginner all the way to the full on Latin level test. If you complete the test successfully you’ll earn an “Honorary Ichthyologist” certificate, which isn’t worth much in the real world, other than bragging rights.
